Producers’ Markets
As you will have seen from December’s BVN we will be looking at things afresh in 2009 as to how best we can service the market needs of local residents albeit that we will not be running the monthly markets.
Much will depend on the availability of producers and their willingness to attend any events we may organize. Notwithstanding we are viewing things through rose coloured spectacles and when we know what we are doing so will you.
Our Christmas Producers’ Market was a great success, and we collected in excess of £300 (Final figure awaited) for the Weldmar HospiceCare Trust. Thank you to all who came, supported, purchased and enjoyed.
On a personal note may I gratefully thank all members of the Litton Retailers Association who have steadfastly held firm over the years, broke a leg when necessary, put up tents in driving rain, suffered bouts of frostbite and the occasional heat stroke in order to provide for the Producers Markets. There is still work to do, and we shall enjoy doing it. We hope you will continue to support us.

Litton and Thorner’s Community Hall
A visit to the hall site adjacent to Thorner’s School will reveal the shape of things to come. Over the last week or so and at the time of writing a reddish iron skeleton has risen from the mud. Over the coming weeks the skeleton will be fleshed out with concrete blocks, and really begin to take on the look of a building destined to be a community hall. A photographic record of progress can be found on the Litton web site www.littoncheney.org.uk by clicking on Community Hall and then on Photo Archive. There’s plenty to see.

Sight of the pictorial progress record being maintained in the hall of Thorner’s School of the construction of the new community hall, the trenches and mounds of spoils appearing on the site itself and the inquisitive faces of the children peering over the hedge. All pretty solid evidence that in the not too distant future Litton Cheney will boast a brand new community hall.
Funding continues (yes, we still need your pennies so please dig deep) and we are already planning a grand opening programme which will give every interest group a chance to view and sample the goodies. Those who attended the Wine Tasting with Steven Spurrier on September 20th at Thorner’s School left with a swagger having gained much new knowledge about the art of viticulture. Steven has promised a return match at the new hall when we shall be concentrating on New World wines. Form an orderly queue please. Grateful thanks Steven.
2009 desk calendars depicting Bride Valley views and skies are proving very popular and can be found at Modbury, Bride Valley Farm Shop in Abbotsbury and by contacting Ron Davidson (482661), John Firrell (482313) or David Taylor (482532). They will also be available at the Christmas Producers Market on Saturday 15 November at Thorner’s School.
Not long now. Prepare to be amazed. If you wish to join the ever growing list of donors please contact the gentlemen mentioned above.

Do you trade in or around Litton Cheney?
The Litton Cheney Web Group's constitution states that we should help to promote local enterprise. One of the ways we can do this is to provide a business directory within this web site. This has now been included and can be found by clicking on the "Local Businesses" item in the menu on the left.
Consequently, all local traders are invited to promote their businesses in the Local Business section of this web site. The web group is offering this as a free service (for the moment at least).
Feel free to send in your listing using our Contact page. Let us know if you have logos or images that need to be included and you will receive an email with instructions about what to do with them. Feel free to write a detailed description of your services as space is virtually unlimited at this stage.

A concerted effort by the village to snatch the 2008 Best Community (Small) Village award from our neighbours at Shipton Gorge sadly fell by the wayside. We did however receive £100 for being second runner up (whatever that means), and we do of course live to fight another day. Congratulations to Shipton for retaining their title. Now, if only we had a community hall we could win it next year!
It was not all bad news at the Awards Night in Sturminster Marshall on Thursday 25 September. Litton Cheney received the WDDC Special Environmental Award and £50 for their fine efforts in setting up the allotments. Well done all concerned. The good life is clearly alive and well.
