Present: Rosie Hallett, David & Janice Hearn, Simon Nobes, John Salvetti, Gil Smith.
Apologies from: Mary Anderson, John Firrell.
The main topic was for the LCWG to be involved with assisting computer users in the village.
John Salvetti proposed that the LCWG should hold an open meeting at LATCH, to consider future regular meetings for people in the village to talk about computers and their use, and it was suggested that we start with a one-off meeting, probably an evening one, as a 'Computers Users Open Evening', with a mention of 'Windows & Wine'.
After discussion it was agreed that John should book the LATCH meeting room for Wednesday, June 9th, with the meeting taking place from 7:30pm, with a glass of wine available if possible. Gil to make arrangements with Alison Johnson.
For advertisement, an Insert should be placed in the June issue of the BVN, (so avoiding the normal deadline), which David would print on coloured paper, with Rosie finding out the numbers needed.
John suggested that we also sent emails to local contacts informing them of the event, which was agreed.
Other Matters:
SUTTON POYNZ Website:
Simon had received an email from Bill Egerton, who is leading a team in Sutton Poyntz to develop a new village website. He is very impressed with ours, and asked if we had any advice to offer.
Simon has replied that the success is principally due to the efforts of the group member responsible for the collection of most of the village information that goes on the site.
(LCWG members will know that in our case, this member is John Firrell.)
Link to another Website:
Simon Nobes had received an email from Matthew Fielding, who would like to have a link on our website to the Dorset page on his website (www.iknow-uk.com) which lists local accommodation . It was agreed that this was acceptable, and Simon would ask if a payment could be to us could be agreed.
The Larcombe family:
Simon had received an email from Renny Richardson who is researching a family named Larcombe, who lived in Litton Cheney in 1901, and would like information about any person or organisation who might have some information.
The meeting closed at 10:15

Members of Bridport & District U3A have made two historic finds in the past month: a previously unknown section of an 11th century abbey, which has been dug up in a member’s back garden, plus a rare fossil.
Members of the landscape archaeology group of the U3A, which also covers Beaminster, Burton Bradstock and neighbouring villages, went to the home in Abbotsbury of group leader Peter Laurie. Six feet under the lawn he has unearthed what Dorset County Museum believes to be the ruins of an outbuilding of the former Benedictine Abbey. Peter thought there was a chance that there could be a Roman road running through his garden.
To test his theory he started digging with his 16-year-old grandson, Oscar, and they discovered a substantial freestone wall about one metre thick and one metre high. He plans to resume digging in the next few months. The abbey at Abbotsbury was dissolved during the reign of Henry V111 and the buildings were then demolished so that the stone could be reused.
Members of the fossil hunters group went to Monmouth Beach, east of Lyme Regis, where the most exciting find was a vertebra from a plesiosaur, an aquatic reptile from the Jurassic period. Other fossil finds included ammonites, brachiopods and belemnites.
To find out more about these and other interest groups, contact Lesley Archibald on 01308 456079. For information on how to join U3A, contact Diana Coleridge on 01308 424431.
Patrick Stokes, past chairman of the Jane Austen Society of the UK, will give a talk entitled ‘The World of Jane Austen’ at the U3A’s monthly meeting at the Christian Fellowship Hall, Bridport, on May 25 at 2.00 pm.

DFAA Homewatch 1.4.10 Chesil Bank Ward Weekly Crime Report 25.3.10 - 1.4.10
Crimes A 36 foot aluminium ladder and other items were stolen from an open barn in Langton Herring between the 16th and 30th March Across the Area 1. I wish to draw your attention to three offences that have occurred in the area during the past week. Six sheds or outbuildings have been broken into with gardening equipment having been stolen on most occasions. It is not unusual for there to be an increase in this type of crime during the spring and you are asked to ensure you have adequate security and that you consider property marking your tools. Many people property mark their tools, lawnmowers etc by painting their postcode and house number or first two letters of their house name on them. 2. An attempt was made to break into the parish church at Compton Valence during the past week. No similar offences have yet been reported but everyone who lives near a church is asked to be aware of this occurrence and to report suspicious people as we don't want this to be the start of a crime series. 3. Four purses were stolen in the town centre on Saturday 27th March. The victims were all ladies who weren't aware that somebody had removed their purse from their shopping bag, coat pocket etc. This is an ongoing nationwide problem that comes to Dorchester from time to time. Please don't become another victim of crime - don't invite crime by leaving purses on show in shopping bags or coat pockets. A reminder that your Safer Neighbourhood Police Officers are:- Sgt Steve Yeoman, PC Sandy Redford and PCSO Sarah Pilcher Call them at Dorset Police on: 01305 222 222 or on our team mobile: 07500 816292 Please only use the numbers above for non-emergency calls. If a crime is in progress or life is in danger, please dial 999.
If you have any information regarding this message please call the Dorset Police on 01202/01305 222222 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. Thank you . Dorset Police Ringmaster Circulation. |

The Sky in April
Now the clocks have gone forward an
hour and as the summer approaches the sky will not darken till later
and the nights become shorter. This does mean staying up later to
view the night sky and getting up earlier to see the pre-dawn sky. On
the plus side the nights should be warmer and viewing the stars less
of an ordeal.

Chairs! - Days of Penance and Numbness are numb-ered
A successful fundraising Easter Bingo event at the community
hall on Saturday 27th March which was in aid of more comfy chairs
produced a profit equivalent to the purchase of 10 padded chairs (almost a
row!).
And there's more! We have since had a lady who attended the event
offer to donate some money in aid of the chairs, and we wondered if there were
others out there who perhaps couldn't attend the fundraising event who
might feel inclined to do the same. It could mean a swifter end to numb bums
and the feeling that you must have done something terrible in a previous life
to have to serve penance sitting on chairs more suited to the classroom of Wackford Squeers in
Dickens's Nicholas Nickleby.
If you would like to contribute towards more comfy chairs at the hall,
please contact David or Wendy Taylor on 482532. This is a chance to leave your
numbness forever behind you. Let's hear it for the chairs!
