In September 2005 the ‘Bride Valley Fledglings’, a playgroup for 3 to 5 year olds, formerly in
Puncknowle, began operating from Thorners School. The stated aims of the Group are listed under
three main headings:
•
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
This underpins all the areas - it is about confidence, self-esteem, control, relationships,
attitudes and dispositions for learning and a sense of community.
•
Communication, Language and Literacy
The majority of this area is about communication , there is a strand for language for thinking, a
strand for reading and a strand for writing.
•
Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy
This is concerned with the concept of numbers and how it is applied in everyday life, it includes
numbers for labels and counting, calculating, shape, space and measured.
Fledglings is based at Thorner’s School with its own dedicated playroom - plus lots more
facilities. We are open on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays all day with hot lunches
possible, or children can bring their own packed lunch. If you have a child ready to come to pre-
school ring Fiona Evans on 01308 482410, or just drop in to have a look around.
NEWSLETTER - APRIL 10th 2013
Before the end of term we managed to plant some early Rocket potatoes, some runner beans in
pots and radish & pumpkin seeds in trays. We have some pretty spring bulbs in flower to brighten
up the outdoor play area. One new thing the children will be trying – using Chatter Boxes to talk
about items brought in from home, a bit like Show and Tell.
We are very pleased to confirm Emma Christmas as our new pre-school Manager, and that Julie
Arak-Newman is now a permanent member of staff. Many thanks to helpers over the transition
period. Can we say a warm Welcome to Edward and his family – also to Daniel and his family –
we hope you enjoy your time with us at Fledglings.
We wish to say a Big Thankyou to Howdens Joinery Co of Bridport for their generous £100
discount off the new dishwasher following the re-furbishment of the kitchen. Also thankyou to
Martin Yeates for bringing in lambs for the children to feed and care for.
The next major Fund Raising Event will be “A Bit of a Do” on Sunday 19th May from 2 – 5pm.
Come along and see the stalls, Big Band Music, old Cars and take refreshments. A Great Date for
your Diary.
If you have any outgrown children’s bicycles, tricycles, balance bikes or scooters, Fledglings would
be very glad to have them – please ring the school number, as below, if you can donate any of
these. Look out for a children’s sponsored bike ride which may be organised soon.
Spring Bank Holiday is on Monday 6th May, and half term week begins on Monday 27th May.
Fledglings Pre-school is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday during term time, and
children can stay for a hot lunch, or bring a packed lunch. For further information about Fledglings
Pre-school please contact staff on 01308 482410 or check out the website
